On this page you will find information and resources about and for diabetes. In November 2002, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Since then, I have come across several websites that I have found helpful and I hope you will as well.
A Diabetes email discussion list is on the National Federation of the Blind's NFB Net list serve. On this list, you can ask questions about diabetes, diabetic care, and get resources and information from other subscribers. To join, send a blank message to diabetes-talk-request@nfbnet.org , and write Subscribe in the subject line. Then reply to the confirmation message, and you will be subscribed.
the American Diabetes Association is the leading organization in the U.S. on diabetes today. Their site has recipes, meal planning advice, tips on many things about diabetes you may not know, as well as general and specific information about both type 1 and 2 diabetes. One could easily spend an afternoon going through their site with all that's there. Check them out.
The Diabetes Action Network , is the diabetics division of the NFB. This division offers support, a Diabetes Resource list (2005) , and advocates on the behalf of blind diabetics. They also produce a quarterly newsletter called The Voice of the Diabetic , which is available online, in print and on 4-track audio cassette. If you are diabetic or want to know more about Diabetes, then check them out.
In the Spring, 2006, issue of The Voice of the Diabetic, there's an article entitled Look What’s Talking! Two Tiny Meters Take the Stage." The article covers two talking blood glucose monitors that are very affordable. One is already available and the other awaits FDA approval. Its good to see that blind people have options in talking glucose monitors, and especially that the options won't cost an arm and a leg to buy.
In the Summer 2003 issue of Voice of the Diabetic, there was an article on Talking Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems . If you are blind and looking for a talking blood glucose monitor, or just want to know the difference between some of them, then read this article.
In the Winter 2001 issue of The Voice, there was an article called Hypoglycemia: Low Blood Sugar. As the title says, it discusses possible signs of low blood sugar. Though every diabetic may have different signs, it would be a good idea to read this article if you don't know what yours are, and to learn how to cope with low blood sugar.
Are you a diabetic that wants to know about meal planning and food exchanges? Recently, the National Federation of the Blind's Diabetes Action network produced a Braille version of a guide for meal planning and food exchange listings. Contact their Matterials Center at (410) 659-9314 for more information and to order a copy for only $10. You might also order a free packet of articles taken from The Voice of the Diabetic newsletter, or the diabetes information packet, available in print or on tape.
The Diabetes Gourmet Magazine is a site I have heard of through the Diabetes Talk email list referenced above. This is the website for the popular Diabetes Gourmet Magazine, but there is lots of information on the site aside from that about the magazine. Among other things, you can sign up for a daily diabetic recipe that is emailed to you. The site lists some sample recipes that have been mailed out so you can see the types of foods that they cover. The recipes include the carb counts and other nutritional information, as wellas the recipe itself. Read more on the Daily Diabetic Recipe page.
